17 More Disturbing Movie Moments That Manage To Be Terrifying With Absolutely Zero Gore

Don't read this post if you were hoping to — oh, I don't know — sleep tonight.

WARNING: While this post contains no blood or guts, it does contain some very disturbing scenes and descriptions, as well as SPOILERS for some of these films. Please proceed with caution!

1. The twist, Primal Fear (1996)

“The ending of this movie still makes me cringe. The whole storyline kept me on the edge, but it was the ending when Edward Norton’s character gave his big reveal that made my stomach turn.”

2. The Wheelers, Return to Oz (1985)

“The Wheelers are horrifying. The whole movie is unsettling — but they take the cake.”

3. The hallucinations, Requiem for a Dream (2000)

“When Sara Goldfarb is having her hallucinations and the refrigerator is moving/banging and the television is talking to her. You can tell she is so frightened and it just doesn’t sit well with me.”

4. The clapping, The Conjuring (2013)

“When the mother’s locked in the cellar and the hands appear out of nowhere and clap? It gives me chills just thinking about it.”

5. The threat, The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)

“In the Disney version, Esmeralda claims sanctuary and Frollo is told to leave, but he secretly stays. When everyone else leaves, he sneaks up behind her, bends her arm so she can’t move, and proceeds to tell her that he will capture her. Then, he sniffs her hair and, when she asks him what he’s doing, he says something about ‘imagining her tied up’ or something along those lines..this is in a CHILDREN’S MOVIE.”

6. The nightmare, Mulholland Drive (2001)

“That scene where the man is describing a sinister figure standing behind the diner in a nightmare he’s been having to a friend. Then they go to the back of the diner to prove that it’s just a nightmare, only to find it waiting for them.”

7. The opening, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007)

“During the gallows scene when the little boy is holding the coin and is about to be hanged for piracy, and then he starts singing. Everyone else starts singing, but then they get hanged and the boy drops the coin. I just thought everyone singing was so creepy and there’s no gore or blood or anything, it’s just unsettling to watch.”

8. The camera view, The Visit (2015)

“The film has practically zero gore, but it’s one of the most disturbing films I’ve ever seen. Especially the scene where the grandmother’s crawling on the floor and then suddenly growls at the camera. I couldn’t sleep for weeks after watching that one.”

9. The “bear” attack, Annihilation (2018)

“When Lena (Natalie Portman) and company are tied up by the lady in the group who lost her shit. There’s this terrifying bear-like creature that essentially uses the voice of the lady it killed to lure them out, screaming ‘Help!’ in the most disturbing way. The bear then screams in each of their faces, hoping for a reaction. Just that little part of the scene still makes my skin crawl.”

10. The fate of Jackson, A Star Is Born (2018)

“The scene in the newest remake when Jackson commits suicide in the garage, and his dog is whimpering outside. It was so incredibly sad and disturbing while showing nothing.”

11. The monster, Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)

“The banquet scene, after Ofelia eats a single grape. That monster with his eyes in his hands starts chasing her and it’s pure nightmare fuel!”

12. The judge’s masquerade, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)

“The song that tells the story of what happened when his wife, Lucy, went to the Judge’s Ball. It’s so unsettling, yet shows nothing.”

13. The jump scare, When a Stranger Calls (1979)

“The scene toward the end where she goes into her bedroom and tucks herself in but, lo and behold, the bad guy is IN HER FREAKING BED WITH HER!”

14. Dr. Facilier’s demise, The Princess and the Frog

“When Dr. Facilier gets dragged to hell through a giant evil clown’s mouth by shadows as his puppets bang the drums around him while chanting…enough said.”

15. The seance, Beetlejuice (1988)

“When the ghost couple are brought back into their wedding outfits, only to age and crumble to dust. It gave me an existential crisis at age 7. I still leave the room for that scene, and I’m almost 35.”

16. The reveal, The Boy (2016)

“The whole movie is creepy without showing very much blood, but one of the most disturbing scenes is the end reveal. Particularly the part when Greta is running away from the ‘real’ Brahms, and he starts talking with that childish voice. Hearing a grown man with a little doll’s face talking like that was just…ew.”

17. And finally, the “Tall Man,” It Follows (2014)

“Any scene that just shows the shapeshifter walking toward the girl. It’s so creepy.”
